Remote Mac connection guide and help
From your first connection to daily use and preparing to leave, the common questions are on this page. For anything else, contact us.
Which ways can I connect?
All of these are installed and set up on delivery; use whichever suits you.
| Tool | Status | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| UU Remote | Preinstalled, the default | Remote desktop showing the full macOS screen; the first choice for daily use. |
| ToDesk | Preinstalled | Remote desktop, kept as a second way in. |
| RustDesk | Preinstalled | Open-source remote desktop, if you prefer it. |
| Tailscale + SSH | Preinstalled, Remote Login on | A private network between your computer and the Mac, then SSH; good for the command line and development. |
- Keep at least one remote desktop tool working, so you still have a way in if another one fails.
- For SSH: install Tailscale on your computer, join the same network, then ssh to the system account at the Mac's Tailscale address. Ask us if you need help joining.
- Do not make the Mac a Tailscale exit node or use any tool to turn it into a proxy for other devices; that breaks the terms of service.
How to connect to your overseas Mac the first time
On delivery we send the Mac's connection details: the UU Remote and ToDesk device codes and passwords, and the macOS account (a standard user, not an admin). Then:
- 1Install the UU Remote or ToDesk client on your own computer or phone.
- 2Enter the device code and password to reach the Mac's desktop.
- 3Log in to macOS with the system account, and change the password to your own right away.
- 4Open Claude Desktop and Claude Code in the terminal, and check that the account is signed in and replies.
- 5Check that the network and region match your order. Report any problem on delivery day.
What comes preinstalled
- Claude Desktop and Claude Code, signed in to your plan's Claude account.
- Remote tools: UU Remote, ToDesk, RustDesk and Tailscale, with SSH (Remote Login) turned on.
- Developer tools: Xcode, Homebrew (owned by your account, so brew install needs no admin) and the usual tools such as Git.
- Install anything missing with Homebrew; for anything that needs admin rights, contact us.
What not to do
Your account is a standard user, so network and system-security settings are out of reach anyway. Please don't:
- Shut the Mac down. Once it is off, remote access stops until someone on site turns it on.
- Sign out of, change or replace the Claude account we activated (section 4 of the terms of service).
- Use the Mac as a proxy, relay or service for others.
For software or settings that need admin rights (a .pkg installer, a system setting), contact us and we install or change it for you. Homebrew needs no admin: just brew install.
Apple ID and preparing to leave
- You can sign in to your own Apple ID on the Mac. Use a dedicated one rather than the account holding your photos and contacts.
- We never ask for your Apple ID or password. Anyone asking in CCRent's name is not us.
- With your Apple ID signed in, keep Find My Mac turned off.
Before your term ends, in this order:
- 1Back up your code and files to your own cloud storage or repository.
- 2Sign out of your Apple ID in System Settings.
- 3Make sure Find My Mac is off.
- 4Sign out of any other accounts you used (browsers, iCloud Keychain, third-party apps).
If your Apple ID is still signed in with Find My on, the Mac asks for your Apple ID password to activate after the reset, and it can't be reset. At the end of the term the Mac is erased and the data can't be recovered.
The remote desktop is laggy
The Mac is on local residential broadband, so how smooth it feels depends mostly on your line to that region. When it lags, try in this order:
- 1Use a wired connection, or move to a stronger Wi-Fi signal.
- 2Lower the resolution or frame rate in the UU Remote or ToDesk settings.
- 3Close local apps that use upload bandwidth, such as cloud sync or video calls.
- 4Try the other remote tool, for example ToDesk instead of UU Remote.
- 5If you mostly write code, use Tailscale and SSH; the command line barely notices lag.
- 6If it is still poor, contact us and we'll check the line.
Moving files and copy-paste
- UU Remote and ToDesk both include file transfer and clipboard sync in the connection toolbar; the exact place depends on the client.
- For code, push and pull with Git instead of copying between computers.
- For large files, use your own cloud storage, or scp / rsync over Tailscale.
The Claude account and replacements
- Claude Desktop and Claude Code are signed in to the Max 5x or 20x account we activated; just use them.
- When you run out of usage, it comes back on Anthropic's schedule. If you often run short, upgrade from 5x to 20x.
- If the account is suspended or stops working under normal use, contact us for a replacement, as often as needed; lost days are added to the end of your term.
- Don't sign out, change the email, password, subscription or payment details, or switch to another Claude account.
Support and contact
- Support around the clock. Email [email protected] or use the contacts at the bottom of the page.
- Include where you ordered, your order number and the Mac's region, so we can find your machine quickly.
- Never send your Apple ID password in a chat or an email.
- For operations we log the Mac's connections and running state, used only for maintenance and troubleshooting.
